I wonder if he'll call the RRR Breakfasters on their "international weapons inspector Jens Lekman" running joke.

In Jens Lekman, Andy Hazel wrote on 14/11:

YES! It's been confirmed in INpress due. Jens is touching down in March apparently and damn straight if there is any auditioning to be done, I'll be doing it. It's going to be a bit embarrassing for the first few weeks I imagine, a lot of doe-eyed chats and indie peeps glancing and milling about. I figure Guy and Geoff have will be showing him around and I'll do my best not to be all: "so do need a bassist/guitarist/drummer/shoe-shiner". Will be interesting to see what effect Melbourne has on him, if any.

Post-industrial lounge-ska? Retro-secular-freejazz?
There is another doom jazz band called Bohren und der Club of Gore who are great, really interesting stuff. Ben Frost got me on to them.

I've just completed my track for this month's 20th. It's sort of antifolk-esque, with four verses of badly sung, hastily written lyrics.

In Control, Andrew wrote on 20/10:

Though Hooky has also disowned New Order, whilst taking enough of a share to ensure that the others can't use that name.

In Epic45, Andrew wrote on 20/10:

Synth bands? I always got them as a shoegaze (or perhaps "nu-gazer") band with electronics.

In I just saw (gigs), Andrew wrote on 20/10:

No new songs; this was mostly Paper Television and Poor Aim material, though she changed the monologues a bit (she sang Hey Boy to an empty drink bottle which she then crushed). She said it was the last tour with the current material. I asked her at the merch stall whether she's working on any new material, and she said that she's going underground for a while.

In Control, Andy Hazel wrote on 20/10:

Interesting what you say about Nottingham, does make sense though. Yes, I read that Peter Hook had totally disowned the film, though he is renown for talking rubbish, especially lately.

In Epic45, Andy Hazel wrote on 20/10:

Cool. I have an earlier album Slides which is great. All instrumental, in fact I didn't know they had vocals at all until I found some samples form their new album, which I've ordered. July Skies are great yes. I'm always a sucker for English nostalgia turning up in experimental synth bands. I wonder how they do it...

In I just saw (gigs), Andy Hazel wrote on 20/10:

Yes, she is a dynamite performer. Was she by herself again? One of the highlights of last year without a doubt. Does she have any new material?

There is now a Comment Spy page, much like those on some other boards, which shows the latest comments posted to this site. It updates itself once a minute, with any new comments automagically appearing at the top.

Also, the top-level Forum page has tab-style links at the top, linking to the Spy page and the Subscribed Threads page.

Oh, and several bugs to do with Unicode have been fixed.

I just saw The Blow (a.k.a. Khaela Maricich), again. She was awesome.

She did a similar routine to the last time, only different. Her show included a master class on songwriting (demonstrating using a plastic bottle as the subject of Hey Boy), as well as her usual entertaining monologues about unrequited desire and songwriting, punctuated by her performing various songs to a backing track.

Oh, and it must be said that she is an amazingly good dancer.

In Nintendo DS, Andrew wrote on 16/10:

That's pretty much what it is, only not quite as free-form. Well, some of the modes are a bit half-baked, but some are more creative.

I haven't got Animal Crossing, though did pick up Brain Training. I'm mostly interested in casual games which aren't going to be an enormous time-sink. (Hence no SimCity or similar; those things are like crack.)

I haven't really explored Electrplankton fully but it does seem pretty cool - a Baby Tenori-on?

I'm putting a lot of hours into Animal Crossing at the moment. What other games are you playing/interested in?

In Epic45, Andrew wrote on 15/10:

I've only got England Fallen Over by Epic45, though.

In Epic45, Andrew wrote on 15/10:

I've heard them and seen them. They're pretty good, though I prefer the members' other project, July Skies. They have a certain very English nostalgic melancholy about their music.

In Control, Andrew wrote on 15/10:

New Order have disowned it? I thought they were right behind it.

And yes, Annik did come across as two-dimensional, as did everyone other than Ian and Debbie. There seemed to be quite a bit of chemistry between the two actors playing her and Ian (who apparently became an item in real life).

Apparently much of the filming was done in Nottingham, perhaps because Manchester doesn't look sufficiently grim these days.

In Control, Andy Hazel wrote on 15/10:

Yes, that closing track was wholly questionable and totally at odds with the feel and heart (and soul, if you will) of the film.

I thought it was a great insight into that era (though the streets of Macclesfield were VERY tidy I noticed), the look occasionally a little too stylised for me, but everyone involved should be proud.

I kept wanting more of an insight into the songwriting, which of course, Deborah was never really given access to. I also felt it was quite a good performance from Samantha Morton given how little she had to do in the film, odd really since the screenplay was from her viewpoint. The scenes with Annik were woefully underwrittten, but then, Deborah had little access to what actually happened between them so I'm guessing it was imagined, I haven't heard of Annik's involvement with the film which is a shame as much of the story is there.
I hope it goes well, and it's a shame New Order publicly disowned it. I'd be chuffed.
